About Us

What is the Verandah?

The Verandah is a community centre jointly operated by Canberra Baptist, Wesley Uniting and St Paul’s Anglican Church in the Stuart Flats, a government housing complex in Griffith. The Verandah operates three times a week. People drop in for coffee, tea, snacks, and a chat. Bread, emergency food parcels and clothing are also available.

It is designed to provide a safe space that fosters community amongst residents of the housing complex.

Are there opportunities to volunteer?

There are many ways to help this important church outreach and volunteers are always very welcome. Some volunteers, after an interview and screening process, staff the community centre during the week.

Others contribute by packing surplus bread provided by local bakeries, making soup for serving during the winter months, contributing fresh vegetables from the Kingston Organic Community Garden, organising food purchases or by regularly contributing specific food items through the “Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard”.

For several years another volunteer group, the Yellow Van (formerly Oz Harvest), has provided the Verandah with regular deliveries of fresh food. They use a refrigerated truck to collect high quality surplus ready-to-eat food from Canberra caterers.

If you are interested in more information about the Verandah or in volunteering, contact the Verandah Coordinator, David Stafford, through the church office.
