Community Service Clubs

About Us

Community gardens have great benefits for people’s health, for the building and development of a sense of community, and for the environment.   As well as these general benefits, we hope the community garden at Kippax will bring some other special benefits as well.

The Kippax garden is a shared community one – rather than individual plots, we all work on any or all of the various garden beds on site.  It is great to see people come specifically to spend time in the garden, or to have children and families do some gardening on the way to or from one of the other activities, or people use it as a “waiting room activity” before one of the other events at Kippax.   There are currently 6 garden beds, but we hope to be able to continue to expand.

The use of the produce supports those who are involved in some ways with the UnitingCare Kippax services and programs as well as being available for the community as a whole (obviously including our community gardeners).   This means that

  • fresh food is available for people accessing emergency relief as well as children and families living in disadvantage;
  • children and families in disadvantage have a grounded educational experience in food production;
  • socially isolated and excluded individuals have an opportunity to be engaged with other individuals and groups in a non-threatening and productive way (providing a source for psychological growth and health);
  • the partnership with the local Aboriginal Community will enable cultural education and experience for all involved regarding ‘bush tucker’ (introducing a cultural awareness and a valuing of diverse cultures in our community);
  • there is the opportunity for building community, developing new friendships and working together from others in the area from all walks of life.
